William IV Library Table Rosewood Mahogany Serving Table Writing Desk Georgian
A gorgeous and impressive William IV rosewood and mahogany library table in lovely antique condition. Made in England in the late-Georgian period around 1830 and with strong Biedermeier influences, this fine and versatile library table has two large, concealed drawers, and can be also used as a centre table, writing desk, or serving table. However it's used, it will add outstanding bygone quality, a striking silhouette of decorative grandeur and a distinctive and attractive aesthetic of understated Georgian finery to any setting.
Impressively sized and finely crafted from gorgeously toned and grained rosewood and mahogany, this striking table was made to be appreciated from any angle and would have originally been situated towards the centre of a grand library. It features a large rectangular tabletop with curved corners and a uniformly carved apron that conceals two large, mahogany-lined hidden drawers, which extend across its entire width and depth – ideal for storing a plethora of papers, electronic devices, and all sorts of paraphernalia.
The tabletop is set on a base that features an ingenious hidden crossbar-stretcher that adjoins a pair of very attractive columnar legs, which distinctively and unusually taper towards the top and are adorned with exquisite roundel carvings to the lower sections, which splay out to lion’s paw feet supported by the original hidden metal castors for ease of moving.
DESIGN
In this stunning table, we can see the departure from earlier Georgian decorative flourishes in furniture design and a move towards the burgeoning influence of the bold and eye-catching shapes and stripped-back designs of the Biedermeier design movement, which was sweeping continental Europe when this super piece was crafted – allowing the outstanding quality of the workmanship and materials to speak for themselves. The effect is a confident and stately piece that impresses without being (seemingly) overly impressive; fine without being ostentatious.
CONDITION
This stunning table is in good antique condition. A beautifully crafted piece, it is structurally sound and has only minor to-be-expected wear to show its impressive age, including some historical wear and touch-ups and a small patch of missing veneer to the corner of the left-hand drawer, only seen when open. The base sits on top of the central crossbar-stretcher and is screwed to secure it in place. Overall it's an absolutely gorgeous piece in lovely antique condition and if well looked after it should be just as stunning for many generations to come – please see the photos.
