William Birch Arts and Crafts Antique Mahogany Ladderback Rocking Chair
A superb quality, strikingly attractive and very rare antique mahogany rocking chair in outstanding condition. Very possibly by William Birch for Liberty of London and most likely made around 1900, this outstanding rush seat ladder-back rocking chair encompasses fabulously detailed design elements and will add stunning bygone finery and quality craftsmanship to any interior.
Crafted from beautifully hued mahogany with fruitwood stretchers, this stunning rocking chair is a breath-taking blend of designs, which were merging around the turn of the 20th Century.
The wonderful, ornate turned arm supports and fabulous arm balustrades nod towards the Art Nouveau and Aesthetic movements, the high back with acorn-shaped finials and pronounced arm joints are strongly influenced by the superb Shaker rocking chairs of the 19th Century, and the gorgeous and superb quality rush seat and shapely ladderback are of the classic British Arts & Crafts style of rocking chairs of the period.
These late 19th century influences blend together beautifully and make this an extremely rare, attractive and remarkable antique rocking chair, very similar to others we’ve seen by William Birch for the Liberty luxury store, and possibly even more outstanding and special for its wonderful detailing and marvellous blend of styles.
CONDITION
This is in excellent condition, especially for its age. Structurally sound and in remarkable original condition, this has been extremely well cared for. The rush seat is in wonderful condition and the only very minor flaws are the to-be-expected marks and blemishes, which if anything only enhance its striking antique beauty. Overall this is a superb and strikingly beautiful antique rocking chair in remarkable condition - please see the photos.
