Victorian Revolving Desk Chair Aged Leather Walnut 1870 Country House Antique

Victorian Revolving Desk Chair Aged Leather Walnut 1870 Country House Antique

A gorgeous, special and very rare Victorian revolving desk chair of outstanding quality in stunning original condition. Most likely made in England around 1870, this captivating, comfortable and classy armchair has aged like fine wine and will enhance any interior with genuine antique quality, bygone sophistication and an exquisite aesthetic of refined quintessential country house elegance.

Made from beautiful chunky solid walnut, this handsome armchair is reassuringly heavy and features a striking open back design with a triptych of silhouetted beautifully shapely scroll-carved arm-supports and central back splat.

The large and firm round seat and generous arching horseshoe-shaped back are both extremely well padded, very comfortable and upholstered with the original excellent quality thick leather, expertly tufted and deep-buttoned in the Chesterfield style and finished with brass studding.

After 150 years or so of use, much of the original cigar-brown leather colouring has naturally faded, but traces of it remain in various areas of the back and seat; the aged leather gives this wonderful chair an even more distinguished and striking look. The seat revolves using the original dual cast iron revolving rings mechanism and is set above attractive curving splayed legs which sit on ceramic castors for ease of moving.

All in all this is a very special piece indeed. Revolving Victorian desk chairs of this style are seldom seen, and an example of such fine quality as this, with such beautiful carvings and the original excellent quality tufted and deep-buttoned aged leather, is an extremely rare find.

This is in good-to-very-good condition. Expertly crafted and built to last, it is generously sized, reassuringly heavy, extremely comfortable and in remarkable original condition. It proudly displays its century-and-a-half’s age, showing to-be-expected marks and bumps to the walnut and the excellent quality leather has aged like fine wine, with the cigar-brown colouring fading to sandy-green in places, though there are no cracks or rips to the leather, which has been treated to keep it rejuvenated for the coming years. The swivel mechanism works well, though can be a bit stiff to get going and may appreciate a light oiling, and the ceramic castors are all complete and work as they should. Overall this is a very special chair in stunning original condition and if well looked after it should be just as breath-taking and useable for many more generations to come – please see the photos.
