Set of 4 Art Nouveau Edwardian Strung Inlaid Boxwood Mahogany Dining Chairs
A very attractive and beautifully decorative set of four Art Nouveau mahogany strung inlaid dining chairs in lovely antique condition. Made in London circa 1910, these gorgeous dining chairs will add more than a touch of antique refinery, colour and chic styling to any interior and come with wonderful provenance and a riveting history.
Made of solid mahogany wood, they feature standout beautifully ornate Romanesque Art Nouveau pierced backs with boxwood-strung inlays to the shapely crests and central back splats, creating a wonderfully decorative aesthetic. They have comfy padded seats with soft pink upholstery and tapering cuboid legs. All in all they’re a really lovely set, with a wonderful history…
HISTORICAL PROVENANCE
The chairs have been in the same family since new – well almost. A particularly special set, they were made for a high-ranking British Army officer stationed at Woolwich Barracks during the First World War, who had put them in storage at a Woolwich furniture store when his fiancée called off their engagement. They were then sold at a substantial discount to a fellow serviceman’s fiancée in 1915, who only retrieved them from storage at the end of World War 1 in 1918, along with a kind letter from the Army officer wishing the couple a long and happy marriage, which they duly had. They lived in London’s East End all their lives and kept these special chairs ‘for best’, which were then passed down to the next generation. The chairs also survived a V2 rocket attack during World War 2 when their original ‘diamonds enclosing fleur-de-lys’ tapestry upholstery was bombed to shreds and later replaced. What a history!
CONDITION
These are in good antique condition. Structurally sound, the soft pink upholstery is in lovely condition with very few marks and they have only cosmetic wear commensurate with their age including knocks and marks, mostly to the corners of the legs. A patch of upholstery ribbon could do with replacing to the side of one of the chairs and one of the crest rails is slightly raised on one side, but overall they’re a wonderfully attractive set of special chairs and if well looked after should remain so for another century or more – please see the photos.
