Rare Pair of Victorian Initialed 1800s Bobbin Turned Chairs by Bowen and Mallon
A beautiful rare pair of initialed antique bobbin turned nursery chairs in lovely condition. Made in the 1800s in Victorian London by Bowen & Mallon, these are an extremely distinctive & unusual, wonderfully crafted rare pair of matching chairs. If you're looking to add bygone Victorian class to a nursery/playroom or for almost unique decorative antique objects in lovely condition, this pair is ideal - quality made, usable, standout, stylish and very rare, you're unlikely to see another pair of these again.
Made out of solid wood, probably ash and elm, these are stunningly eye-catching and expertly crafted. They feature beautiful and impressive 'Bobbin' turning throughout, including the spindles and backs which join to impressively square back legs, extremely unusual undulating seat frames with gorgeous grain and rattan/bergere weaving, bobbin turned front stretcher between bobbin front legs and double side stretchers. The craftsmen at Bowen & Mallon clearly knew what they were doing to create such wonderful pieces and made sure to sign their work with initials stamped to the backs.
MARKINGS
Although they no longer have the Bowen & Mallon plates which would have been nailed to the underside, both chairs have the initials 'F.L' stamped on the back of the seats, the same as the only other pair we've found in our research, making it unquestionable that these were indeed produced by Bowen & Mallon of Hampstead, London, in Victorian England.
CONDITION
Structurally sound, these are in very good condition. They show lovely signs of patination and light wear as you'd expect but no major bumps, nicks or scratches. The cane webbing seat on one chair could be a later reweaving and the other chair is missing a small section of the woven bordering, which is barely noticeable, a relatively simple fix and doesn't affect the strength of the weave or the desirability of this wonderful pair - please see the photos.
