Rare Chinese Fretwork Rattan Ebonised Bench Vintage Hallway Entrance Bench
A very rare, impressive and extremely attractive vintage Chinese lacquered bench with geometric open fretwork and padded rattan seats. Based on Eighteenth Century Qing Dynasty furniture styles, this lovely bench was likely made towards the latter part of the 20th Century, circa 1970s, and will add a bygone Oriental style and exquisite cultured beauty and grandeur to any setting.
A wonderful mix of functionality and standout design, this is a beautiful piece that was made to be used as well as admired. The fabulous geometric open fretwork design to the back and sides is based on the Eighteenth Century style of furniture from the Jiangsu region of north-eastern China, where much of China's most elegant furniture originates, and symbolises lasting and unbroken prosperity.
Sturdy and expertly made, it features a black lacquer finish with red embellishments, quality mitred joinery and attractive and comfortable padded rattan seat and matching back.
A fabulous and very rare bench that blends practicality and beauty, this would make a standout piece in any setting, adding traditional Chinese style, quality craftsmanship and intrigue to wherever you put it. We can’t find another like it on the market, so grab it while you can.
CONDITION
This is in good-to-very-good condition. Wonderfully made to last and structurally sound, there are signs of cosmetic wear to the lacquered finish, which could easily be touched up, and some minor knocks, as you'd expect from a used piece of its age and which only enhance its vintage look and desirability. Overall it's a fabulous, ornate and rare bench with bundles of vintage and Oriental appeal, and if well looked after it should last for many years to come - please see the photos.
