Pair of Vintage Mother and Baby Leather Elephant Statues Figurines Liberty MCM

A gorgeous rare pair of high-quality Mother & Baby vintage leather elephant figurines in lovely condition. Likely made around the Mid 20th Century, this beautiful pair will add vintage decorative charm and quality to any interior.  
 
Leather elephants have been decorative items since the Victorian period and became en vogue in the early 20th Century with Liberty of London retailing them to customers. 
 
Beautifully proportioned, this is a particularly fine pair. The mother elephant is large and striking but not huge and shows wonderful lined detail to her skin, while the baby elephant is a super cute companion, with the pair together making a beautiful mother-and-baby tableau. 
 
Hand-made using papier-mâché frames with leather woven around the outside and the detail carved afterwards, these would have originally had ivory tusks, which have since been replaced with very good plastic ones after the worldwide ban on ivory trading.  
 
All in all they’re a fantastic and extremely decorative pair of fine leather elephants. All the more rare for being a mother-and-baby duo, they will bring a joyous vintage charmed appeal to any setting. 
 
CONDITION
These are in very good condition. Structurally sound, the only minor flaw is a hard-to-see crack to the outer leather wrap on the left-hand-side of the mother’s trunk, which gives it slightly more movement than it would have originally had but isn’t an issue as long as the elephant isn’t mishandled and picked up by the trunk. Overall they’re a really beautiful high-quality rare pair in lovely condition and if well looked after they should remain so for many more decades to come - please see the photos.
