Rare Pair of Eames Armchairs by Herman Miller DAX 1960s Caramel Leather MCM Rope

Rare Pair of Eames Armchairs by Herman Miller DAX 1960s Caramel Leather MCM Rope

A gorgeous and very rare pair of authentic Mid Century leather Eames DAX armchairs by Herman Miller. Designed by arguably the 20th Century's most iconic design partnership, Charles & Ray Eames, this stunning and very comfortable pair of armchairs were made by Herman Miller in America in the 1960s and will enhance any interior with beautiful rare caramel colouring and an authentic Modernist-Chic Space-Age look.

Effortlessly cool and extremely comfortable, these super DAX armchairs feature four-legged tubular steel chrome H-bases above all original nylon glide feet, which join to the fiberglass shell seats via Herman Miller logo-stamped black shock mounts.

Upholstered in the original beautiful caramel leather with contrasting white plastic bordering, these superb armchairs are much sought after for their simplicity, beautiful lines and curves and their significance as design icons. The rare colouring and authenticity of this particular pair makes them very special indeed.

Sometimes called the Eames 'Shell Chair', 'Bucket Chair' or 'Rope Edge Chair', the DAX armchair, which stands for Dining Height Armchair X-Base, was first produced in 1952 and is the most sought after version of Charles and Ray Eames's iconic fibreglass chairs, which revolutionised 20th Century furniture.

This pair has ‘V’-embossed fibreglass shells in Greige (named for its combination of grey and beige) colouring, one of the original three Eames fibreglass shell colours from the early 1950s. These chairs are post-1959 fourth generation DAX armchairs as they have the improved white nylon glide feet, with their 'H-bases' also showing that they’re from the earlier generations of the Eames DAX armchairs.

All in all this is a fantastic, rare and historically significant pair of very comfortable, colourful and gorgeous Mid Century Modern armchairs. Designed by modern masters Charles & Ray Eames and produced by Herman Miller, a household name celebrated for Mid Century quality and excellence, these will be showstoppers in any setting.

CONDITION

These armchairs are in fair-to-good condition. Structurally sound, they have the usual signs of age associated with these DAX armchairs and have all the original parts and are very comfortable. The nylon glide feet are in excellent condition, the chrome bases have been cleaned and polished and are largely rust-and-pitting-free and the plastic bordering is in lovely condition with just a few grazes, as is their purpose to protect the chairs. The gorgeous caramel leather has been cleaned and treated and shows signs of wear including snags, scuffs, cracks, marks and parts where the stitching has worn, as is common with these rare old chairs. Overall these are a wonderful, rare and extremely comfortable pair of authentic Eames DAX armchairs in good condition and if well looked after they should be just as desirable and comfortable in another six decades if not more – please see the photos.
