Mahogany Leather Office Armchair Regency Bergere 1930s Swivel Tilt Plantation

Mahogany Leather Office Armchair Regency Bergere 1930s Swivel Tilt Plantation

A strikingly attractive and rare Regency-style swivel and tilt mahogany and leather carved bergere office armchair with brass castors in good condition. Likely made between 1920-40 in the Regency style, this elegantly handsome, extremely comfortable and eye-catchingly smart armchair is ideal as an office, desk or library chair and will enhance any interior with its lovely two-tone colouring and distinguished bygone aesthetic.

This gorgeous and reassuringly heavy tilt and swivel armchair features a beautifully sculptural rich caramel-coloured mahogany frame, the contours and carvings of which are displayed to every viewing angle and work beautifully against the lighter rattan bergere sides and the darker leather colouring.

Particularly rare are the rattan ‘bergere’ closed sides, which give a stunning, uncommon and distinguished plantation aesthetic. Each double-woven inside and out for durability, they are set in beautifully curving mahogany fore-frames.

The arm supports and three-sided apron are embellished with gorgeous finely carved detailing and the large and comfortable sprung seat is upholstered in smart chocolate brown leather to match the back and rear.

The seat is supported by four shapely mahogany legs with carved detailing, each set on very high-quality brass castors for ease of movement and there is a central crank beneath the seat with the original ‘Made In England’ makers mark, which is tightened or loosened to allow for a faster or slower tilt.

All in all this is a very attractive, distinguished and uncommon armchair, which wouldn’t look out of place in the most grand of offices or libraries and will add stunning quality, colouring and a strikingly impressive look to any setting.

CONDITION

This is in good antique condition. Beautifully crafted, reassuringly heavy and structurally sound, the tilt crank works well, the rattan bergere sides appear to be modern refurbishments, as are the very high-quality brass castors. It has to-be-expected signs of wear, including arm discolouration from wear, minor knocks to the fame and legs and a couple of grazes to the leather, but nothing hugely noticeable or off-putting. All in all it's a wonderful rare chair in good condition and if well looked after it should be just as eye-catching and comfortable for generations to come – please see the photos.
