Leather Lounge Armchair and Footstool 1960s Hans Kaufeld Mid Century MCM Swivel
A strikingly attractive, excellent quality and extremely rare Mid Century European designer swivel lounge armchair and matching footstool in lovely vintage condition. Made in the late 1960s and designed by heralded German designer Hans Kaufeld, this extremely comfortable and stunning pair will add fabulous two-tone colouring, outstanding quality and a quintessential ‘60s-cool, statesmanlike ‘Mad Men’ aesthetic to any interior.
A fabulous and incredibly rare set, we’ve never before seen this superb Kaufeld armchair with its matching footstool. The stunning and extremely comfy pair features a strikingly impressive high-back swivel armchair and matching footstool, both having gently curving seats and finished in excellent quality leather in the very-late-1960s two-tone hues of bronzed-olive-green and milk-chocolate-brown.
Kaufeld founded his factory in Bielefeld in 1918 and specialised in designing and producing extremely high-quality, stylish furniture, so much so that he was awarded the contract in the 1960s to furnish the Governmental Office of the German Chancellor with armchairs, most likely this notable design amongst them.
Impressively sized, reassuringly heavy and expertly manufactured to the highest degree, both pieces are set on four-legged pedestal bases of brushed aluminium beneath cast iron, arched under-crossbars. The chair is a high back version with headrest, giving a super-smart, executive quality and making it the ideal swivel lounge chair.
An outstanding Kaufeld design throughout, of particular note are the bold and unapologetic, almost-right-angled, tapering armrests, the super-plump back and the shallow-angled, gently curving seats.
The cushions are plump and comfortable and all are removable except for the headrest cushion which remains fixed in place, with all original clear perspex feet glides being present.
All in all this is a fantastic and extremely rare set of super-high-end 1960s designer seating, which won’t fail to impress and will add an outstanding Mid Century look of quality and sophistication to any setting.
CONDITION
This armchair and footstool are in good vintage condition. Solid, sturdy, structurally sound and expertly crafted, the armchair swivel mechanism works beautifully, and the leather has been treated to keep it rejuvenated and looking its best. The only flaws are minor marks to the leather including to-be-expected nicks and scrapes on the rear and external edges of the back and armrests, slight minor movement to the armrests and one of the four metal buttons is missing to the underside of the footstool cushion, but overall it's a fabulous and extremely rare pairing in lovely vintage condition and if well looked after it should remain so for many more decades to come – please see the photos.
