Initialed Pair of Antique Grandfather Fireside Stickback Windsor Chairs 19th C
A wonderful rare pair of initialed antique English 'Stickback' Windsor chairs. Dripping with historic character, these 19th Century chairs have been professionally restored to make them sturdy & usable armchairs that retain their outstanding authentic time-worn look. We hope you’ll agree they are a stunning complementary pair of timeless farmhouse country fireside/carver/grandfather Windsor chairs.
Likely made around 1860-70, both are stamped with the initials "R.W" and possibly "R.G" on the backs of the seats, which suggests they may have been made together or have found their way to each other as a near pair, so we'd love to see them stay together! Made of beech with solid saddle elm seats, they feature lovely spindle backs with shapely large curved crest rails, sculpted wavy open arms with turned upright supports and ‘H’ stretchers between turned legs which haven't been cut down as you sometimes find.
Though undoubtedly adult chairs from their proportions, both seats are on the narrow side, so they may have been made for trim sisters or a slender couple and are more grandmother than grandfather chairs, with the 'red' one having had a bygone paint job which only adds to their charm as individual pieces in a super pair.
These lovely armchairs have been professionally restored to make them sturdy and wobble-free. They show plenty of wear and tear and have taken their fair share of knocks over the years, including period restorations, which only add to their character and charm. At some time way back when, a dog decided the lighter chair would make a good bone and woodworm also took a fancy to it (both chairs have been treated for woodworm for good measure) giving it a very characterful look. Something for the antiques and history lovers, these are an honest, charming and rare pair of armchairs which tell a fascinating story - please see the photos.

The lighter coloured one has suffered from some dog bites and severe historical woodworm (both chairs have been treated for good measure) giving it a rather gnarled & scarred but not displeasing look.
