Gothic Windsor Chair Gothic Revival Early 20th Century Strawberry Hill Armchair
A gorgeous and extremely rare Gothic Windsor armchair in lovely condition. Widely considered the pinnacle of Windsor chair design, this rare ‘Strawberry Hill’ style of Windsor is quintessentially ‘English antique’ and is brimming with finely carved decorative detailing. This exquisite armchair will enhance any interior with its magnificent, refined and eye-catching antique style.
Gothic Windsor chairs first came into fashion in the mid-1700s, when the Gothic Revival movement started as an homage to the designs of the Middle Ages Gothic period. This fine example was likely made in the early-to-mid 20th Century, though could possibly be older. The 18th Century versions of this Strawberry Hill design command prices in the tens of thousands.
Gothic Windsor chairs are generally considered to be the best and most sought after of Windsor furniture, and you can see why from this stunningly designed example. Beautifully crafted from richly toned and reassuringly heavy solid wood, this fabulous chair features an impressive single-piece saddle-sculpted seat into which the legs, back and arm supports fit, in the ‘Windsor’ fashion.
The ‘Gothic’ name comes from the gorgeous pointed arch-shaped back and the breathtaking Gothic fretwork detailing to the back splats. It has shapely swept back arm supports and impressive cabriole front legs supported by a three-part crinoline stretcher.
All in all this is a breathtakingly attractive, very rare and highly usable Gothic Windsor armchair, which won’t fail to look sensational in any setting.
CONDITION
This is in very good condition. Beautifully crafted, reassuringly heavy and structurally sound, it shows only minor wear and a few nicks and hairline cracks to the seat, which if anything only add to its aged appeal. All in all it's a magnificent and rare chair in lovely condition and if well looked after it should be just as breathtaking for generations to come – please see the photos.
