Glastonbury Throne Chair Elm Artisan Sculptural Craftsman Savonarola Rustic
A gorgeous, special and very rare vintage elm Glastonbury chair in wonderful condition. Likely made in the latter quarter of the 20th Century in England, this stunningly impressive armchair will add beautiful colouring, superb artisan quality and rustic bygone grandeur to any interior.
Impressively sized and reassuringly heavy, this fabulous armchair was expertly crafted from wonderful quality elm wood showing super multi-toned hues ranging from ruddy nutty brown to golden honey and has a fabulous silky finish.
Extremely rare for having curved, ‘X-frame’ or ‘Savonarola’ style legs, which are notoriously difficult to perfect and especially on such a scale, this gem of a chair is a wood admirer’s dream and it has a grand and regal-yet-hearty aesthetic. Beautifully sculptural and extremely robust, the wonderful woodworking and minimalist-rustic design really set it apart.
It features a large indented and bordered seat with matching back, fabulously shapely curved arms and a substantial stretcher between the wonderful scissor-style curved legs. Traditionally crafted without nails, glue or screws, it is securely held together by artisan wedged mortise and tenon joints for the ultimate wow-factor appeal.
All in all this is a superb example of a Glastonbury chair, far more attractive than many designs, and it won’t fail to impress or add a rustic sculptural grandeur to any setting.
CONDITION
This is in very good condition. Structurally sound, extremely robust and sturdy, reassuringly heavy and expertly crafted, it shows only minor marks to show its age, which only add to its rustic aged appeal and charm. Overall it’s a fabulous rare chair and if well looked after it should be just as breath-taking for many generations to come – please see the photos.
