George Walton Arts & Crafts Glasgow School Art Nouveau Antique Fireside Armchair
A breathtaking antique Arts & Crafts throne-style armchair in beautiful condition. Most likely made in Glasgow in the 1890s, it has extremely strong similarities to George Walton and the Glasgow School of the Arts & Crafts design movement. It truly is a design wonder, impressively sized, very comfortable and will add bygone quality, charm and finery to any interior.
Made of solid richly coloured hardwood with gorgeous patina, most likely fruitwood, it features a stunning and very unusual two-part elongated arch shaped back with beautiful bergere weave. It has wonderfully impressive and unusually shaped throne-like arms, beautifully curved front and back legs (particularly in the style of Walton), and a gorgeous and highly detailed, colourful and spacious medium-to-firmly sprung needlepoint seat in stunning condition – a joy to sit in as well as admire.
All in all this is a very special chair and though not yet officially accredited to Walton, we believe this to be either a stunning example of his work due to the sublime craftsmanship, or by one of his contemporary Glasgow School master craftsmen. We haven't seen another like this despite searching for a long time and it's very unlikely we'll find another, so this is possibly a unique piece of design history. If it gets officially attributed to Walton, which it could well be in the future, it will be several times more expensive!
CONDITION
This is in very-good-to-excellent condition. Structurally sound, we believe the chair to be in remarkable all-original condition. The only very minor flaws are the to-be-expected minor marks and a very small area of fraying to the lower middle of the bergere back, but overall it’s in beautiful and quite remarkable condition and if well looked after it should remain so for another 100+ years or more - please see the photos.
