Fine Regency Bergere Leather Library Chair 1810 Georgian Cane Castors Armchair
A gorgeous, fine and extremely rare mahogany and leather Regency bergere library armchair in fabulous antique condition. Most likely crafted around 1810-20 during England’s Regency period, this extremely impressive armchair exudes stately charm, timeless elegance and a quintessential ‘Country House’ aesthetic, and will add gorgeous colouring and refined antique quality to any interior.
Especially remarkable is that this superb and very rare armchair seems to be all-original and without any signs of re-upholstery or new cane work. It features a beautifully crafted mahogany frame adorned with bergere cane work, gorgeous hand-stitched mottled dusky-red leather cushioning and has the lovely detailing of Regency brass studding and brass castors for ease of moving.
The shapely mahogany frame shows super detailed craftsmanship, having attractively turned front legs and arms supports, sweeping rear legs and lovely reeded ornamentation to the arms and back rail.
The bergere cane work to the sides, seat and back shows a lovely, aged colouring and is in remarkable condition for its age, while the evidently original custom-made, sizeable and plump, piped and hand-stitched leather cushions provide super comfort and fabulous colouring to this stunning piece.
Complete with the original finishing touches, the seat cushion is hand-made and hand-stitched with front corner angles to accommodate the arm supports, the leather arm pads are finished with wonderful Regency floral brass studding and the chair is easily moved on lovely brass castors, the rear two of which still retain some of their outer leather trim, which were used in the Regency period to soften the rolling movement over a wooden library floor.
All in all this is a superb example of a Regency bergere leather armchair, which won’t fail to impress and will add bygone grandeur, gorgeous colouring and a stunning look of timeless quality to any setting.
CONDITION
This armchair is in good-to-very-good antique condition. Structurally sound and extremely comfortable, it has minor signs to show its age and use, including minor bumps and hard to notice signs of historic repair to parts of the back frame, to-be-expected minor wear to the bergere cane work and slight wear to the thick and excellent quality leather, including scuffs to the edges and protective piping and a hard-to-notice hairline crack in the central crease of the seat cushion. The chair has been polished and the leather has been treated to keep it rejuvenated and looking its best. Overall it’s a fantastic, rare and fine example of a Regency armchair in lovely antique condition and if well looked after it should be just as magnificent for generations to come – please see the photos.
