Fine Antique Centre Table Biedermeier Karelian Birch Russian Empire Early 19th C
A rare, outstanding, stunningly attractive and extremely impressive antique Karelian birch centre table in beautiful condition. Made in Russia in the first half of the 19th Century, this incredible Biedermeier centre table is a statement piece par excellence, which will add genuine bygone quality and timeless dazzling elegance to any contemporary interior and wouldn’t look out of place in the grandest of stately homes.
Russian-made in the first half of the 19th Century when the Biedermeier style of furniture was sweeping through the European continent, this breathtaking and impressively sized table would have likely graced a grand stately home of Tolstoy’s youth. It’s made from gorgeous Finnish Karelian satin and burr birch wood, giving it the most captivating golden hues. Karelian birch is one of the most distinctive, finest and rarest woods in the world thanks to the unique soils of the small area of Karelia in Finland (formerly a 19th Century Grand Duchy of Russia), which produces this beautifully grained and hued birch wood.
Finished with ebonized columnar embellishments, the black colouring contrasts wonderfully against the shimmering gold hues and grain striations of the birch wood.
Impressively sized and reassuringly and heavy, it features a large and deep layered circular top with stunning tri-symmetrical grain, which is supported by six beautiful and extremely rare square leg columns above the gorgeous and also incredibly rare rounded six-point-star base above graduated feet. It's finished in a spectacular golden lacquer that shimmers under light, making this already extraordinary piece even more mesmerizing and regal.
Biedermeier furniture was the precursor and inspiration for the Art Deco furniture movement, and you can quite see why with this exquisite piece. With its striking and unapologetically impressive look, its bold shapes, geometric curves and statuesque right angles, this is an incredible example of sublime design and superior antique European furniture.
Very likely unique – we've not seen one featuring the same six square legs with rounded star base design – this fantastic piece was likely custom-made for one of the finest houses in the Russian Empire.
Recently imported from Russia by an avid antiques collector, this special table will add gorgeous colouring, genuine bygone quality and real wow-factor to even the most contemporary interior.
CONDITION
This is in wonderful antique condition. Impressively sized, reassuringly heavy and structurally sound and sturdy, the base, legs and top are all joined together and have no wobbles, chips or breaks. There are some minor nicks and wear to the lacquer and some very minor fissures in the woodwork joins, as you'd expect with an antique piece of this age, but overall it’s in beautiful condition. It’s an exquisite example of bygone European finery that has aged superbly in the last two centuries and it should last several more if well looked after - please see the photos.
