Cowhide Chest of Drawers Checkerboard Harlequin Rock Star Statement Furniture
Furniture doesn’t come much more ‘Statement Spectacular’ than this unique and sensational checkerboard cowhide chest of drawers. A truly outstanding piece that mixes knockout wow-factor with antique craftsmanship, this is sure to set eyes popping and tongues wagging and will enhance any interior with a luxurious and refined-yet-extravagant, totally ‘rock star’ aesthetic.
A fascinating and unique piece, this staggering chest of drawers is a mix of antique craftsmanship and fabulous modern styling. It originated in the late 19th Century or early 20th Century, when it was likely crafted in Indonesia as a teak chest. It was then more recently refinished in outstanding quality black and white checkerboard genuine cowhide – which we can’t find another example of or similar to – making this not only a wonderfully eye-catching piece but also extremely rare indeed.
Well-proportioned and reassuringly heavy due to the antique solid teak base and frame, it has beautiful floral antique carvings to the base and feet, which beautifully complement the checkerboard cowhide finish.
The attention to detail and symmetry of the sumptuous black and white checkerboard finish is simply outstanding. The hand-stitched cowhide is of superb quality and even the handles have been finished in cowhide, while the back is finished in lovely quality black leather, showing the no-expense-spared work that went into crafting this stunning piece.
The chest was reimagined in the early 2000s for an English country house and has remained in storage ever since. The drawers appear to be a modern addition, which were likely added to the antique chest at this time. A great, versatile size for a chest of drawers, this would work wonderfully in hallway, living room or a bedroom.
All in all this is a truly stunning and unique chest of drawers, which blends superlative quality with breathtaking style. An all-natural marriage of the antique and the modern, if there’s one piece to really make an impact, hold the attention and make you smile, then this is surely it!
CONDITION
This very-good-to-excellent condition. Beautifully crafted, structurally sound, reassuringly heavy and built to last, it is generously sized and has been in storage since being reimagined in the early 2000s. The cowhide is in wonderful condition and has only a couple of minor marks to the top, which may well easily clean off, and there are a few scuffs to the black leather at the rear. Overall this is in wonderful condition and if well looked after it should be just as magnificent for many decades to come – please see the photos.
