Blonde Mid Century Chest Of Drawers Tallboy Highboy Walnut Alfred Cox Heals 1960
A very impressive, rare and strikingly attractive Mid Century blonde walnut chest of drawers in lovely vintage condition. Retailed by Heal’s, designed by Alfred Cox and made by his much-heralded eponymous British company, most likely in the early 1960s when higher-end manufacturers were beginning to marry Scandinavian design influences with quality materials after post-war austerity had subsided, this spectacular Highboy or Tallboy chest of drawers will add design interest, outstanding quality, gorgeous blonde colouring and a fabulously chic Mid Century aesthetic to any interior.
Extremely stylish and exquisitely crafted by Alfred Cox, one of the most acclaimed Mid Century cabinet makers who were renowned for their use of quality materials, craftsmanship and attention to detail, this stunning gem features an eye-catching Cubist-influenced raised design, having five large drawers and set on very attractive, unusually long and quite striking, quintessentially Scandinavian-Mid-Century-styled splayed and tapering legs with rounded edges.
Impressively sized and crafted from solid blonde walnut wood with a lovely shimmering grain pattern, the drawers are all teak-lined and of varying heights, and it is crowned by an impressive, large and thick top with angled edges to mirror the lower section. The drawers have the original very charming, carved and tapering button handles and completing the craftsmanship is a three-sided apron, the front section being gently concave with chamfered edging and an attractive central decorative carving.
All in all this superb chest of drawers is a wonderful example of Mid Century design and craftsmanship at its finest - outstanding materials crafted into a tastefully bold design, it will no doubt feature in a design museum if not already. This very useful storage piece is a joy to behold, and it will add gorgeous colouring and an interesting, stylish and smart Mid Century look to any setting.
CONDITION
This is in good-to-very-good vintage condition. Solid, sturdy, reassuringly heavy and structurally sound, it was expertly crafted and has been well loved. It has the original makers labels as well as stamp to the rear, is in the original finish and has only minor imperfections to show its age and use, including minor nicks, stains and blemishes, which are quite well hidden by the grain patterning. Overall this is a superb example of Mid Century craftsmanship in lovely vintage condition and if well looked after it should remain just as good-looking for generations to come – please see the photos.
