Beau Brummell Vanity Cabinet Washstand Gentleman’s Georgian 1795 Washstand Bidet

Beau Brummell Vanity Cabinet Washstand Gentleman’s Georgian 1795 Washstand Bidet

A gorgeous, fascinating and extremely rare Georgian mahogany gentleman’s ‘Beau Brummell’ vanity cabinet in lovely antique condition. Most likely made in England around 1795, this extraordinary and decorative piece would make a fantastic bedroom addition or quirky side table/cabinet, ensuring a distinguished antique look, creating a wonderful talking-point and giving an intriguing glimpse into the life of a gentleman more than two hundred years ago.

Named after Georgian England’s pre-eminent gentleman dandy, Beau Brummell, a nationally renowned gentleman who took particular pride in his physical appearance and personal grooming, this vanity stand would have been used in a wealthy 19th Century gentleman’s bedroom and contained everything he needed to adequately smarten and care for himself.

As you’d expect of a high-end George III piece, the design and craftsmanship are outstanding throughout. Sturdy and reassuringly heavy, it’s made of beautifully toned solid mahogany and features an ingenious space-saving design.

The double-leaved top pulls apart, with each leaf resting on a pull-out arm to reveal a triple compartment area and a cleverly hidden pull-up tilting vanity mirror.

The front is adorned with beautiful brass pulls, the uppermost set for a dummy-drawer, the middle set for a latch-locking cupboard compartment and the bottom set for a lower drawer. The really exquisite and extremely rare inclusion to this fabulous piece is the original and in-tact slide-out raised porcelain bidet which emerges using the single lower pull. Set on four beautifully decorative, tapering and turned legs, with four matching ones supporting the bidet, this is a really special and rare piece.

Outstandingly crafted, it shows wonderful design and stunning attention to detail throughout, from the raised drawer bordering to the gorgeous brass handles and the beautiful legs. Furthermore, the mechanics of this very intricately designed piece are exemplary, with the bidet sliding out smoothly, the original latch-lock working perfectly on the cupboard door, the slide-out arms perfectly designed, and the ingenious height-adjustable tilting mirror mechanism.

All in all this is fabulous and extremely rare Beau Brummell vanity cabinet, which won’t fail to impress and will add intrigue and a genuine fine antique Georgian aesthetic to any setting. We can’t find another with the bidet still present and in-tact, so grab this distinguished rare beauty while you can.

CONDITION

This is in good antique condition. Impressively sized, reassuringly heavy and structurally sound, it has only minor marks, knocks and touch-ups. The raising mirror catch can be a little tricky to use and requires a certain knack, which we’ll explain to the buyer. Overall it's a wonderful rare Beau Brummell vanity cabinet in lovely antique condition, and if it's well looked after it should remain so for another couple of centuries or more – please see the photos.
