Antique Shelving Media Unit Display Stand Console Primitive Brutalist Craftsman
An extraordinary and extremely rare, large and impressive display stand or shelving unit in lovely antique condition. Perfectly imperfect, strikingly imposing, and wonderfully characterful, this traditionally handcrafted and versatile, one-of-a-kind statement piece could be used as a display stand, media or shelving unit, or even as a console or serving buffet. However it’s used, this substantial piece won’t fail to add richly aged colouring, eye-catching rustic charm and a splendid Primitive-Brutalist aesthetic of bygone traditional craftsmanship to any interior.
Impressively sized and extremely heavy, this super shelving unit was handcrafted from solid teak using traditional joinery methods. Likely made in rural France in the early 20th Century, it displays techniques that craftsmen have been using for thousands of years.
It features fantastically imposing four-inch squared hewn leg posts with notched crowns, into which slot the extremely robust crossbar stretchers of the two shelves, revealing traditional exposed mortise and tenon joints to the sides, which are complemented by a variety of plugged joints in the traditional craftsman fashion.
This super shelving unit could be used inside or out, and the lower shelf has ten cross-planks while the upper shelf has a hugely impressive 4cm-thick single plank shelf, enabling it to hold the heaviest of items.
All in all this is a quite extraordinary shelving unit. A unique and versatile statement piece, its lovely rich colouring and breathtaking physicality add a superbly bold presence, while its stunningly primitive-yet-masterful craftsmanship will enhance any setting.
CONDITION
This shelving unit is in very good antique condition. Large and extremely heavy, this super piece was traditionally handcrafted and is very robust, structurally sound and sturdy. Perfectly imperfect, it has a lovely, aged appeal and to-be-expected minor marks and signs of wear to show its age, which only enhance its aged rustic appeal. Overall this is a truly wonderful piece and in lovely antique condition and if well looked after it should be just as magnificent and for generations to come – please see the photos.
