Antique French Marquetry Cabinet Kingwood Marble Ormolu Serpentine Napoleon III

Antique French Marquetry Cabinet Kingwood Marble Ormolu Serpentine Napoleon III

A magnificent, gorgeous and lavishly decorative antique French kingwood inlaid marquetry serpentine cabinet with marble top. Likely made in the late 19h Century in the Napoleon III style or possibly earlier, this stunning and practical scene-stealer makes a very useful cabinet and will enhance any setting with its fabulously ornamental and luxurious bygone Gallic aesthetic.

Impressively sized, wonderfully multi-toned and having a beautifully flowing and rare serpentine shape with substantial rounded front corners and feet, this show-stopping cabinet is adorned throughout with rich golden kingwood veneer interspersed with wonderfully intricate floral and border inlays of boxwood and other multi-toned woods. It has a heavy and shapely chamfered white marble top with pale grey and pink striations, which is not fixed but sits perfectly on top. The cabinet is finished with highly decorative and eye-catching gilt ormolu metalwork embellishments.

The hours of exacting work taken to craft such a fabulous piece is staggering to think about. As well as being such an attractive piece it is also very practical, having a large upper drawer with ormolu pulls and a door revealing two shelves.

All in all this is a gorgeous, stunning and practical antique French marquetry cabinet, which will enhance any interior and wouldn’t look out of place in the most grand of settings.

This is in fair-to-good antique condition. Impressively sized, reassuringly heavy and structurally sound, it's a beauty to behold and has been used in a bathroom foyer in an English manor house for the past 50+ years. As such, the humidity has caused some hard-to-notice signs of wear and ageing to the veneered inlay work and a small area of lifting to the veneer on the left-hand side, only noticeable when really looking for it. There are signs of historic touch-ups upon close inspection but due to the multi-toned hues of the wood, these are barely noticeable. The marble top is in wonderful condition and the key is seized in the lock, meaning it doesn’t currently lock but is functional as it’s used as a pull to open the door. The condition has been taken into account in the pricing, which would be multiple times higher if in very good condition, and overall it's a dazzling piece and a wonderful example of antique Gallic finery and if well looked after it should be just as gorgeous in another 100+ years – please see the photos.
