Fine Antique Windsor Rocking Chair Ash Elm 19th Century Broad Arm Yorkshire
A gorgeous, impressive and fine antique Windsor rocking chair in beautiful condition. Most likely made circa 1850-70 in Yorkshire, England, this wonderful antique is an excellent example of Victorian English Windsor rocking chairs. Large and extremely comfortable, it has gorgeous toning and patination and will add rustic grandeur and bygone quality to any interior.
Impressively sized and expertly crafted from beautiful yew and elm woods using traditional English 19th century woodworking skills, it features a gorgeous large sculpted single-piece elm seat plate with lovely grain and sturdy broad horseshoe-shaped arms with wonderful end curls, complete with natural knot holes, and superb turned wood detailing throughout.
It has a standout upper arm-support for extra stability, with lovely turned ash spindles and a shapely 'Christmas Tree' design back-splat, below the wonderfully shapely bentwood bow back, which flattens out from circular at the arms. Robust and beautifully ornate turned legs, which match the superb arm supports, have a rare chunky double H-stretcher between them for extra support.
Unlike many of its contemporaries the chair has not been lacquered but instead waxed and polished and so retains a much sought after natural rustic charm, colouring and patination.
All in all this is an outstanding example of 19th Century craftsmanship. Wonderfully appealing to the eye with its fabulous traditional Yorkshire Windsor design, rich nutty golden tones and super grain detailing, it’s also an absolute dream to relax in and rock away the hours. Examples as fine as this can fetch well into the thousands so grab it while you can.
CONDITION
This is in very-good-to-excellent antique condition. Impressively sized and reassuringly robust and sturdy, the only very minor flaws are the to-be-expected minimal knocks and bumps and a hairline crack towards the top of the second spindle from left, which don’t detract at all from this stunning sturdy classic Windsor. Overall it’s in wonderful condition and if well looked after it should be just as magnificent in another 150+ years - please see the photos.
