1950s Bureau Desk by Robert Heritage MCM Slimline with key Teak Sapele Mahogany

1950s Bureau Desk by Robert Heritage MCM Slimline with key Teak Sapele Mahogany

A gorgeous and extremely rare piece of British furniture history – one of the first early examples of an original 1950s Robert Heritage bureau desk by Beaver & Tapley. Made in England soon after the company changed its strategy in 1956 to produce higher-end, quality furniture and collaborate with bright young British designers such as the Heritage, this wonderful piece exemplifies what Beaver & Tapley had now become: makers of super-stylish, high-practical, space-saving, top-quality household furniture, but which was still attainable by the burgeoning middle classes in post-war Britain. An iconic and practical Mid Century piece, this one is especially rare for having the original key and two maker’s labels – the only other we’ve seen with both labels is in the historical section of the maker’s website itself, and even that one doesn’t have the key or the early brass knob handles, which this one does!

A giant of 20th Century design, Robert Heritage is synonymous with Mid-Century quality. He went on to become the most awarded designer in the history of the British Design Council and you can clearly see his talent on display in this early example of his work: understated magnificence with an emphasis on the eye-catching, and always superbly constructed using quality materials.

One of Heritage’s first collaborative designs for British manufacturers, this charming bureau desk is a really solid little beauty. Unlike many more-flimsy pieces of the period, which often prioritised style over durability, you can feel the quality in this delightfully sturdy bureau desk. Made of teak wood, it has teak and sapele (or ‘pinstripe’) mahogany veneers, the latter displaying a beautiful multi-toned pinstriped patterning, which was the chic finish of choice for higher-end furniture of the late 1950s.

Ideal as a handy and stylish space-saving desk, this super bureau could also be used as an eye-catching console or storage cabinet and its slimline size makes it usable almost anywhere in the home. It features a large lockable pull-down desk with original key and plenty of internal cubby-hole shelving storage, and has a lower cupboard with two sliding doors and the original and very-1950s, rare brass knobs which the earliest models had.

Set on eye-catching projecting front legs and angular rear ones, there’s so much understated style and craftsmanship to admire in this this charming bureau desk, from the inset frontal detailing with mitred joins to the angular cubby-holes, and the lovely pinstripe mahogany patterning to the robust pull-down desk mechanism. Compact, angular and stylishly efficient, it’s a wonderful example of early British Modernist design at its best and its space-saving size and versatility makes it the ideal eye-catching piece for almost anywhere in the home.

CONDITION

This super bureau is in fair-to-good vintage condition. Extremely rare for having the original working key and maker’s labels, it is solid and structurally sound. Its super design and durability means it is remarkably sturdy after almost seven decades, with the only signs to show its age being to-be-expected cosmetic marks and bumps, including one hard-to-notice veneer chip at the very rear of the right-hand side. Overall it's an exceedingly charming, highly usable and very versatile piece, which is also an important inclusion in British furniture history. If well looked after it should be just as stunning for generations to come – please see the photos.
