1800s Antique Aesthetic Movement Chair, Aesthetic Antique Rush Seat Sussex Chair
A beautiful, rare and very decorative 19th Century Aesthetic rush seat chair in really lovely antique condition. Most likely made in England around the peak of the Aesthetic Movement circa 1875, this gorgeous, versatile and very decorative chair will add more than a touch of antique finery and class to any interior.
The Aesthetic Movement supported natural beauty and the sensual and visible merits of art and design and this special chair show all those sentiments. Made of solid hard woods, most likely fruitwoods, it shows lovely colouring and wonderful detailing in the intricate scrolled carving to the back and legs and has stunning finials across the back which silhouette beautifully.
Often overlooked by some craftsmen, the legs are works of art: the front legs are beautifully turned and carved, rounded and tapering with stunning outwardly pointing feet. It has double side stretchers, a rear stretcher and a beautifully turned front stretcher to match the front legs.
Lower than chairs of today, this features an unusually shaped large seat with the original comfy woven rush still in place and showing some of its original regal purple colouring. The tops of the legs are displayed to the corners of the seat in the manner of the later William Morris Sussex chairs.
All in all this is a stunning and rare Aesthetic Movement chair. Versatile and eye-catching, it will add antique decorative charm to any setting.
CONDITION
This is in very good antique condition. Wonderfully crafted, it is structurally sound and can still hold the weight of an adult male. It has the to-be-expected minor marks and nicks for a chair of its age but overall it’s a gorgeous, highly decorative and rare Aesthetic chair and if well looked after should be just as fine in another 150 years or more – please see the photos.
